Rules of Contest 2024 Photogenic Science
14.05. 2024
1. Registration of Photos for the competition
The 2024 Photogenic Science contest is open exclusively to employees of the Czech Academy of Sciences (including part-time employees). Each contestant may submit up to 3 photos in the main category, up to 3 photos in the secondary category “Intergenerational Science”, and 2 scans of photos in the special category “Analog Photography”, totaling a maximum of 6 digital photos and 2 scans of analog photos.
The main category – Photogenic Science presents photos that depict scientific subject-matter – capturing objects of science and research procedures, parts of living and non-living nature, scientific phenomena, and/or activities related to the work of employees of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS). What do the instruments used for research by scientists look like, and what do the objects themselves, which are the subject of scientific inquiry, look like? The expert jury will select photos from the main category for the exhibition and for the calendar of the CAS. Only the author of the photo may enter it as a competition photo. Photos in this category must not be older than two years, and it is not permitted to submit photos that have already been published in any calendars of research institutions.
The secondary category – Intergenerational Science encourages finding inspiration in the contrast provided by the comparison of generations. Different generations working together brings new ideas, techniques, and perspectives. The meeting of the past and the present reminds us that scientific inquiry is a continuous process that is constantly evolving. Enthusiasm for science is passed down from generation to generation, each standing on the shoulders of the previous one. Photos of equipment, libraries, monuments, research institutions, or historical events related to science in the past remind us that scientific knowledge is the heritage of our entire society. Intergenerational Science is an opportunity to reflect on this collective journey of ours. The expert jury will select photos from this secondary category for the Photogenic Science exhibition.
The special category – Analog Photography focuses on the unlimited creation of participants (it does not have to be thematically related to science) using non-digital photographic techniques, such as classic black-and-white and color photography of any format, historical photographic techniques (photogram, the collodion process, daguerreotype, etc.), polaroid photos (without the use of polaroid printers), etc. One of the selection criteria will also be the ability to utilize the specifics of the chosen medium. Submit scans of your photos to the competition with a resolution of at least 3,000 pixels on the longest side of the photo. Each contestant can submit up to 2 scans of analog photos to this category. Only the author of the photo may enter it as a competition photo.
The Photogenic Science contest will take place from 6 May to 17 June 2024. Photos and scans of analog photos must be submitted using the online registration form on the www.vedafotogenicka.cz website, where the contestant will provide their name, last name, email address, and workplace (CAS institute) affiliation. Each competition entry must be labeled with a meaningful title and description. Entries must be in either square format or with a 3:2 aspect ratio, with a resolution of at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side of the photo. The contest organizers reserve the right to exclude entries that do not meet the focus of the competition, as well as entries that do not meet the listed parameters or entries whose content is in breach of Czech legislation.
